San Francisco Nature Education's interactive environmental education programs develop leadership and stewardship in youth and adults. We welcome everyone interested in learning more about the local birds and natural environments!

Brief HistoryExecutive Director, Nancy DeStefanis, discovered the great blue herons nesting in Golden Gate Park in 1993 and began monitoring the colony.
In 2002, San Francisco Nature Education was founded to share her passion for these majestic birds with school children and the community. In 2003, our school programs served over 500 students annually. San Francisco Nature Education has provided over 22,000 students with in class environmental education and field trips to local parks and 255 students with internships. In 2002 San Francisco Nature Education began a series of nature walks throughout the city as well as multiple programs at Stow Lake and Heron’s Head Park. Today, SFNE offers 24 field trips per year. Programs

School Program - Since 2000, we have provided over 22,000 students hands-on and place-based experiences of nature.

Heron Watch - Our spring Heron Watch Program (six Saturdays in April and May) provides an in-depth experience of the charismatic great blue heron colony that nests yearly at Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park.

Youth Naturalist Intern Program - We train middle and high school volunteers to serve as interpreters and naturalists for our Birding for Everyone and Heron Watch programs. San Francisco Nature Education has enrolled over 255 students in the internship program.
