Brief HistoryExecutive Director, Nancy DeStefanis, discovered the great blue herons nesting in Golden Gate Park in 1993 and began monitoring the colony.
In 2002, San Francisco Nature Education was founded to share her passion for these majestic birds with school children and the community. In 2003, our school programs served over 500 students annually. San Francisco Nature Education has provided over 22,000 students with in class environmental education and field trips to local parks and 255 students with internships. In 2002 San Francisco Nature Education began a series of nature walks throughout the city as well as multiple programs at Stow Lake and Heron’s Head Park. Today, SFNE offers 24 field trips per year.
