San Francisco Nature Education
- Provides interactive environmental education programs that develop leadership and stewardship in youth and adults. Our school programs focus on providing educational enrichment to students from underserved communities. We use local parks as natural classrooms to observe local and migratory birds and to provide inspiring and engaging natural experiences. 20,000 students served to date.
- Conducts twenty-three field trips each year throughout San Francisco.
- Conducts Heron Watch six Saturdays in April and May each Spring. Adult volunteers and interns with high powered spotting scopes show the nesting herons and their chicks to the public during a three hour period each Sat. and answer questions.
- Trains middle school and high school students to serve as interns at Herons Head Park during winter migration and Stow Lake during the spring nesting season of the Great Blue Herons. 260 interns trained since 2002.
- Publishes an eBlue Heron Newsletter ten times per year.

Great Blue Herons Return to Golden Gate Park
Four pairs of great blue herons have returned to breed at the newly renamed Blue Heron Lake (formerly Stow Lake). San Francisco Nature Education’s (SFNE) campaigned to rename the lake after the beautiful herons who have been observed by SFNE nesting there since 1993. Two pairs are incubating eggs. Females lay two to five eggs, then both males and females take turns incubating them. Eggs hatch 30 days later.

San Francisco plans to celebrate singer Linda Ronstadt’s 78th birthday by dedicating a special day in her name.
A group of local fans, spearheaded by San Francisco Nature Education Executive Director Nancy DeStefanis, petitioned the city’s Board of Supervisors to recognize Ronstadt for her philanthropy, artistry and her decision to call San Francisco home for the past three decades.
